Why do The Friends of Ferguson Library want my old books and music?

We are a volunteer, non-profit organization that receives, processes and places about 100,000 items a year.  Part of our mission is to keep books circulating in our community. Your donations go to:

  • The Friends Book Store (proceeds support the Library’s programs and special projects).
  • The Ferguson Library to supplement its collection.
  • Local agencies free of charge. Learn more about the Friend-to-Friend Free Book Program.

What kinds of items do The Friends accept?

All the following materials are welcome, unless visibly falling apart, moldy, shredded or otherwise too damaged to use.  We clean every item, so mere dirtiness is NO problem.  If you are in doubt, please include them and we will make the determination:

  • Books -- all kinds, any subject, fiction , non-fiction, hard cover, paperback, especially recent paperback fiction and children’s books.
  • Music scores, CD’s, DVD’s, cassette tapes and videos.
  • Software  -- less than three years old.
  • Recent encyclopedias, dictionaries and other writing helps.
  • Foreign language and ESL materials.
  • Classics (fiction and non-fiction), poetry and plays.
  • Art and photography books.
  • Reference materials.
  • Magazines, if recent (within a few issues) or timeless (ex. cooking or design).
  • All vintage materials that may have collectible appeal.
  • If you are unsure, give us a call.

Where should I bring my donations?

Donations can be dropped in totable bags or boxes at any branch circulation desk, or in one of our stores.  Larger donations should be delivered to the Harry Bennett Branch (Donation Drop Box by the exit door) or directly to the Main Branch, at the back loading dock (off Spring St).

Our volunteers are very busy, so we appreciate your bringing your donation in to us.  However, if you have a significant donation (more than a single car load), you are disabled, or are otherwise unable to come to us, a volunteer may be able to pick up your donation.  In order for them to do so, the material must be neatly bagged, boxed or bundled in not-too-heavy, easy-to-carry loads. No basement or attic stairs, please!  A Friends volunteer may visit first to ensure suitability and preparation.

Can I get a receipt for tax purposes?

Yes.  The Friends of Ferguson Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  If you want a receipt for your donation, ask the person to whom you deliver your donation, or call us and we will mail you one. For drop offs at the Main Library, self service receipts are available.

How else can I help?

  • Join the Friends.  Book donations are only a part of our many activities.  Your membership contribution also helps the Friends stage art shows, fund the Library's adult and children summer reading programs, operate Books-for-Babies, Reach Out and Read, Literary Competition, annual Book and Author Luncheon, as well as many other literacy, literary and community events.
  • Become a volunteer.  Opportunities are available in every program.  If you want to stay close to your donation, come work in our book shops or learn to clean, sort, price and shelve donated materials.

I still have questions:
